Dear Charles, Kristin, Mike and rest of the family.
I am so sad that Larry has passed away.  He has meant so much to me since I started listening to "Upon this rock" in 1972.  The consert in Kristiansand two years ago with you all, was fantastic.  In Skudeneshavn in June last year he did not look well, but on stage he was so powerfull.  I will miss him!
Love from Tone in Bergen, Norway

It's quit amazing. this sundaymorning I had to go for a two hour-drive and I decided to take a sampler of Larry with me in the car. Me, my wife and our three year old daughter had a great time an lots of fun singing together 'na, na, na, na,' together with Larry in ' Sweet, sweet song of salvation'. This is just one of his legacies. He was my musical heroe, a rebel and a true follower of Jesus. This combination made him one of a kind. I onced interviewed him for a tv-show and than I met the other Larry: grumpy and not verry kind. But after that I liked him even more because he was also true to himself and not fake. I wish you all great memories, sweet comfort and strengt. Marc

It was my privilege to meet Larry & Charlie back in the late 80's when they came to Northern Ireland to play some concerts organised by my friend Trevor King, I was overwhelmed by the humility of the man who I classed as one of my musical heroes and his humour and relaxed attitude really made me feel at home in his company, Driving him around in my old car (it really was a low budget tour, but he didn't mind) felt just like a bunch of friends hanging out and I am proud to say I knew him if only briefly. This world is a poorer place for his passing and I treasure the memories I have of this very gifted charming guy who left us such a rich legacy of sound.
Rest in peace Larry, I hope they're letting you crank it up up there! may the memory of your life be an inspiration to many for years to come, God bless you sir.

I came to know Larry's music through my uncle, Eddie Lee. Larry had a profound influence on his life, and after his death, his lyrics once again came back to haunt me out of the complacancy in which I found my relationship with God. Larry's ministry through his music has guided me through changing every aspect of my life; my worldview, my relationship with God, and my future life goals and purpose. I can honestly say that without the music in my life, I would be an entirely different person. He has certainly been used by God to an extent that most can only dream of, and while he will be missed by all whom he impacted during his ministry, his legacy of love and his prophetic wisdom will undoubtably live on. My deepest sympathies go out to his family during this troubling time. Know that you are in our prayers.

God's servant, Larry Norman, should not be buried in a "Potter's Field." There is nothing wrong with the church or being buried in a pine box with a small bundle of flowers. There is also nothing wrong with dying as a poor man, but especially for those of us who cannot honor this man's life by attending his memorial service, please join me in thanking God for this man, to honor his God, our Lord, his family, and his ministry by donating generously to his family.  I have already contacted the church and they will pass on all financial gifts to Larry's family.

Send your gift to:

In 1976 I moved to the Bay Area to attend San JoseBibleCollege. One of my new friends asked me if I wanted to go see a Christian rock concert. I was blown away to learn that there was such a thing! Christian rock music, WOW! That concert turned out to be A Day in the Son at PAL Stadium in San Jose. Larry, Randy Stonehill, Mark Heard, Daniel Amos and Tom Howard were a few of the performers.

Shortly thereafter, I became a Christian concert photographer and shot most of them between 1977 and 1990 for Star Song and then Celebration Concerts. Through this I became friends with Larry, his father, Joe and mother, Margaret. In about 1989, Larry asked me to go with him to San Francisco to shoot his photo in front of the old Norman house near the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park. Larry, his son, Michael, his then-wife, Sarah and my son, Daniel (the boys were about five years old), piled into my station wagon and drove up to the City. As we drove, Larry entertained us all by singing along with the radio that was playing oldies, doing the harmonies and really hamming it up. What a great day that was!

From the time I learned of Larrys music at age 19 until this day at 50, I have listened to it. His music impacted my life in many ways. His lyrics cut right to the chase and sometimes to the bone. His example has often emboldened me in sharing my faith with others. Larry often said out loud what many of us only think. He was unashamed of the Gospel. I feel blessed to have known him.

One last story About ten years ago I was talking to the new chaplain, Dominic, in Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall where I was a Probation Officer. Dominic (whose last name I cannot recall) was a young man, maybe 24 years old. As we talked, his shirt sleeve rode up and revealed a tattoo of Larrys famous open mouth with the three crosses on the tongue logo. It blew me away that this young guy knew of Larrys music. He said he had been a street kid in L.A. when he met Jesus through Larrys music. Some tattoo artist was able to recreate the artwork from an album cover onto his arm. He said Larrys example is what moved him to go into full-time ministry to young people.

Margaret, Charles and Michael, I am praying that your feelings of loss will be softened by the many posts on this site that testify to Larrys positive influence on peoples lives. We will see each other again someday.

Your friend,

Stan Faddis

Growing up with Larry.  I am a Larry Norman fan from way back.  My parents were missionaries in Peru for 30 years and I attended boarding school on Ecuador beginning in 1st grade.  From a young age Larry Norman's music was a part of my life and of those other Mk's around me.  For awhile there, all we had were hymns and Larry.  I learned many of his songs by heart and can still sing them 25 years later.  My gratitude to Larry for letting himself be used by the Lord and his music ministering in places he may never have heard of.  Today I am back on the mission field in Nicaragua, though we call the Salem area of Oregon our home, and I hear via email that Larry has gone to his savior.  Thanks Larry, enjoy!

I'm happy for Larry, but so sad for all of us who knew and loved him, or just loved his music. What an incredible loss for us! But our loss is Heaven's gain.
Larry changed the world and touched so many lives. I'll never forget the first time I spoke on the phone with my fellow comic book writer/artist Chris Yambar. I can't remember if I had just done a comic book signing at his gallery in Youngstown Ohio, or if we were on the phone making plans for the signing to come, but anyway, we were talking and in reference to whatever the topic was, I said "The Beatles said all you need is love", to which Chris replied "And then they broke up!" We both realized at that moment that we had something in common beyond comic books. We were both Larry Norman fans. We also quickly realized that we were both believers in Jesus, and this knowledge transformed us from casual acquaintances to lifelong pals.
Other than God, who knows how many lives Larry has touched and how many souls have been redeemed for Him. I'll bet the number is staggering.
Anyway, I'm sad to be living in a world without Larry, but proud to have known and loved him, and called him my friend. I look forward to seeing him when my time here is up!
My heart goes out to Larry's family and I pray that God will comfort you and bring the peace that passes all understanding.

Dearest  family.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm also sorry because we have all of us, fans and believers all over the world lost a great source of inspiration. Musically, but mainly in how to be a true follower of Christ.
I myself discovered Larry when I was 14 years old. It's a long time ago, and all trough these years of living, his music and lyrics have been in my head and in my heart. His songs spoke to me in a very special way and "Walking Backwards Down the Stairs" was one of the songs i would hum and sing to myself as i teenager. I learnt it on my guitar as well.
I was so lucky to attend one of his concerts i Norway at the age of 19. It was really good, and the T-shirt I bought that time was really outworn when I finally threw it out :o)
"I Wish We'd All Been Ready" was played and sung in German while I was in Germany evangelising at the age of 20.
All in all Larry has with his music and message of believing been in my life for 26 years, and I miss him.
The bright side is that now he's with Jesus celebrating life forever and without health issues or worries.
Thank you Larry for bringing Jesus to so many in so many ways.

I pray that you who are left will receive the strength you need to keep it up now, and that Jesus will bless your path from here on like I'm sure He always has.

Love

Charles & Family:

I send my condolences to you as Larry has left this world behind. I am praying for you all that the Lord Jesus will comfort you.

As others have said already, I, too, have been touched by the music of Larry  over the years. I frst  became acquainted  with his music in the late 1970s after I had become a Christian in June of 1975. Some friends of mine in college introduced me to his music through our college radio station. Shortly after this, I purchased "In Another Land."

Since then, I have shared his music with youth groups and friends. One friend, an alcoholic who only receives about $600/month through SSI, has come to really enjoy his music and has become a Christian as a result. I have given him albums, CDs, and videos over the last 20 years to help him in his spiritual journey.

I have been a Phydeaux Phan Klubb member and a current Solid Rock Army member. Larry's music has helped with my growth as a Christian by providing me encouragement to boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus.

I pray that God will continue to bless the ministry of Solid Rock in reaching out
with the life changing message of Jesus. Thank you Larry for your gift in sharing the Gospel through music.

In Him,

Rob Kirschner

I met Larry in 1985 at a concert he gave outside Wilmington, Delaware. I wasn't going to meet him, as i had every intention of going out to my car and leaving after the great concert. But, i couldn't find my car and after a hapless search, went back inside the church to wait it out. Just another thing to illustrate how i seemed to be searching for God's direction in my life and unsure what i was to do, although i knew it couldn't be to wait and see.

The line was pretty long to see Larry, but there were many more parked cars than people in line, so i decided while i was waiting to find my car, i might as well wait in line to say hi and thanks.

What struck me was how he really and truly cared about every person he spoke with. In one case, he and the young girl went off to a private place to pray about something close to her heart and something she felt she couldn't say aloud with others around. She clearly looked troubled, and when they re-emerged, she looked exuberant.

When it was my turn, instead of saying hi and thanks, i found myself telling him how i really didn't know what God wanted me to do. I felt as if i were on the launch pad but had no clue for what sort of adventure and i wanted to find out what it was.

He told me that i wanted to know what was happening (and here he jumped) over here, while i needed to know that i knew everything i needed to know (he jumped back) right here. Nicest way of "wait and see" i ever heard. And it made total sense.

He put his arm around me and gave me a hug. I hugged back, silently thanking God for such a wonderful servant.

I found my car after that. It was right in the middle of the parking lot. Soon after i met my husband, and here we are, 20-some odd years later.

Between the concert and the time i met my husband, i bought some cassette tapes of Larry's albums. I had the vinyl LPs, but they wouldn't play in my car. I was at a stoplight with my windows open and had "The Rock that Doesn't Roll"  cranked up pretty loudly. I was singing and nodding along. The guy in the car next to me started to smile and groove along with the beat. Then he heard the verse,

"You've got to rock me from the water,
You've got to rock me from the grave,
You've got to rock me when I'm feeling good,
You've got to rock me till, rock me till I'm saved."

He looked rather frightened and as if he couldn't believe that he was actually rocking along to Christian music.

The light turned green, and I never saw him again. I hoped it helped to lead him to Christ.

I had hoped to see Larry again before he left the planet. Guess I'll have to wait for the afterlife now. I'm sure there'll be a long line smile.gif

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you cry, grieve, and give thanks.

I got the news today. Larry Norman died on Sunday. The end of an era. For me, right out of rock and roll, Larry was the first (and best) who understood that the devil doesn't have to have "all the good music.".

I saw Larry in concert about 10 times. Each time was a learning curve for me. He wasn't interested in fame, in popularity, in making people"happy" or feeling good. He devoted himself to his Lord and his music.

What an impact seeing his blond, long hair and black shirt and pants, slamming great tunes and putting together such terrific lyrics.

I am glad he was "only visiting this planet"! I can't know your sorrow at your loss. I can pray for your comfort in your grief. Thank you for sharing Larry.

I wonder if the guitars will be loud enough in heaven?

I just heard the news of Larry's homecoming and read all the posts from around the world about how Larry's music and life touched us all.

I wanted to add my brief comments:

I first heard Larry's music as a 10 year boy and brand new Christian back in the early 1970s.  He was on an album I think produced by Billy Graham's ministry (It had Johnny Cash singing on it too).  I somehow ordered the record off the television and still have it.  Over the past 35 plus years, I've been greatly touched by Larry's music.  I never got to see him in concert but I've collected 20 or CDs of his music.  I've introduced my children to his music and I've been inspired to live for the Lord no matter the consequences.

Thanks Norman family for sharing him with us.  The many stories of his genuineness are inspiring.

Well Norman Family,
I can see Larry now, jammin' away on his piano,......"Why should the devil have all the good music?........"
Singing as strong, if not stronger than he ever has. Blonde hair every where. The Lord pleased with his offering and grinning from ear to ear. "I couldn't wait to see him live". As he leans over to Peter and trys to speak above the straight forward, solid gold piano.
I remember seeing Larry a couple times but years ago. One of the last times was at Cornerstone festival when it was still in Lake County, IL. (w/ Darrel Mansfield & Glen Kaiser) After that was a solo gig, about this time of year in '88 or '89 up at Moody Bible Institute on the north side of Chicago. We drove in about 10" of snow up  Lake shore drive and had to leave the show early to make sure we made it back home OK.
We had the privlege of playing a little benefit for Larry, down in Joliet a couple years back.
What a guy and what an example of God's faithfulness.
My prayers are with you all but rejoicing as well.
Play on Larry, Play on!
Mike

May God bless and console you as you experience the grief of Larry's parting; and please remember that his Lord has welcomed him home with a big "Well done!"

Following is my tribute to Larry:

"I was lost and blind 'til a Friend of mine came and took me by the hand.  Then He led me to His Kingdom; it was in another land...."

Tonight I learned of the passing of Larry Norman into the presence of his Lord.  I would not have immediately expected tears to come upon the hearing of this, but they have indeed come.

For whatever condition my spiritual life may be, Larry was the first person to disciple me, via a twelve inch circular vinyl LP entitled "Only Visiting This Planet".  I literally wore out the grooves on that album, the one with the black label and the gatefold cover; and before I ever got a copy of "In Another Land", I had to buy another copy of "Planet"- this time the one with the blue label and without the gatefold cover.

At a time when Judas Iscariot was getting all the good press with "Jesus Christ Superstar", and it was in no way cool to be otherwise associated with Jesus Christ, Larry unapologetically proclaimed his allegiance and celebrated his Lord with verve (inside joke intended).

He brazenly mocked the pseudo-spirituality of the pop culture crowd to their faces with his scathing parody album "Streams of White Light Into Darkened Corners."   Of the mainstream church, he said, "They say I'm sinful, and backslidden; that I have left to follow fame.  But, here I am talking 'bout Jesus just the same." When starting a song with a line like "Sippin' whiskey from a paper cup" would have gotten you kicked out of 99% of the churches in America, Larry had the temerity to start with THAT and then to lay it on the line with a second verse that added, "Gonorrhea on Valentine's Day; and you're still lookin' for the perfect lay...."  Then he made his point clearly enough that even the most dope-addled freak among us could understand: "Why don't you look into Jesus?- He's got the answer."

And thousands of us, maybe millions, dumped our dope and picked up our Bibles.  We put on our headphones, cranked Larry up real loud, and read for ourselves about the Rock that Doesn't Roll and the Unidentified Flying Object coming back to take us home.  Now we are a peculiar people- our ears may not be able to hear you without a PA system and power chords (or at least a good hearing aid), but our hearts hear God's still small voice ok.

And that is what Larry was interested in.  He opened the doors of the church to the freaks and longhairs and tired rebels looking for a God worthy of their lives.  And he gave God's new wave of musical evangelists a platform from which to proclaim their Lord- Solid Rock Records.  Christian kids everywhere stood up with our fingers pointing to heaven, crying "ONE WAY!"  His "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" became a campfire classic.   CCM'ers, Christian folkies, Hardcore Freaks, and Christian rockers of every strype have a common musical founding father in Larry Norman.

Tonight, I imagine Larry is standing before his Lord, singing "We can be together, now and forever- I Love You".  His body is whole again, and the youthful fire that burned so brightly in him is back for good.

One last thing- one more gift that Larry gave me:  Years ago my wife told me that her earliest recollection of me was in the college Sunday school class of Harvard Avenue Baptist Church; perched on the back of a folding chair with my twelve-string, singing Larry's "The Outlaw" for the class, making his song my own.  In all time and eternity I do not think I could imagine a better first impression I would want for my Kathie to have of me.

Thanks, Larry; and rock on.

When I was a teenager working at a Christian bookstore in the early '70s, I loved Larry's music.  It was so cool to hear "my" kind of music knowing that the Lord loves any kind of praise.  He set a precedent for Christian music that took Christian music beyond organ music and into rock.  Many of the older people said it wasn't godly, but I knew that the Lord accepted all praise, and this kind set my heart toward His.  Larry's music and hair reassured me that the Lord loves us all the way He made us.  Now Larry gets to see Him face-to-face while we struggle and grow here.  It is better to be with the Lord than in the body. May God's peace be with you all during this short time until you will be with the Lord and Larry again.

I don't think any artist's music, Christian or otherwise, has had as profound an influence on my life as Larry's. He often frustrated me with some of his antics, but geniuses rarely make easy companions and Larry was a true genius. In a few hundred years many of today's Christian artists and their musical fluff will be long forgotten, but Larry's music will take its rightful place among the best and most creative music the body of Christ has ever produced.

Praise God for a man who loved the Lord his God with all his heart mind body and soul! I'm 27 and even though I'm young I too was influenced by Larry's music in my teens as brought to me by Forefront's tribute CD. It is a rare thing to find a brother who saw the Gospel pure and undefiled and would speak honestly, just like Jesus, to the heart of the matter regardless of what our churchy religion often might say. Thank you, Larry, for being a voice in the wilderness and I hope to be a fraction of the child of God that you were. Blessings to you, Norman family in your mixed time of joy and mourning. Our prayers are with you and yours.

Few months ago I was thinking how sad it is that we dont have more good Christian music, two names that always come to mind when I think of quality is Larry Norman and Darrel Mansfield. We have been so richly blessed by his ministry I look forward to a day in eternity when I can sing with Larry. Larry with his Bible as foundation (never compromising) has always brought smile to my face, he will be remembered as a good men of God. He may be missed by us but Im sure he is being enjoyed by God.

His love for unsaved and desire to reach many and stop them from missing the most important thing in their life has always been so infectious.  One always had the impression that Larry could see the big picture and knew his priority, he was happy to teach us trough his music and also remind us that we should follow his personal saviour, I have no doubt that many a young man have decided to stick with Christianity as they could see a great example that with Jesus and Salvation that we have trough him is not lame but has power to change lives.

This message entrusted to him has reached further then he knew but Im sure things are much clearer to him now. I grow up in what use to be Yugoslavia and many of my friends now in their mid 40s and 50s use to talk about the new phenomenon, faith alive with hope that Gods love and his interest in us is amongst us.

In Austria where I studied theology I could find young students listening to his music to my surprise when I moved to UK some 15 years ago I could still find number of people who Love Larry. Im happy to say that all of my friends that Love Larry have two things that unites them Love for Good music and Love for God.

My love and prayers will be with your family that God would provide you with the necessary support.

Your brother

I was just 14 - 15 when I got my hands on a copy of Street Level. My Grandmother had sort of reluctantly bought it for me. I looked at the long haired guy with the gas mask on his shoulder and thought "hey this guy looks cool!" wink Suffice it to say, many years of learning gutiar and songwriting later, I am what I am- out there on the streets playing for spare change- largely because of what I learned from Larry.

The tradition of what he taught so many of us lives on. God rest your soul, Larry.  You will see us up there, just like the song says.

Dearest family and friends of Larry,

God bless you and grant that you feel His nearness in this time.  I had the pleasure of seeing Larry play several times in the mid seventies and was stuck each time by how sad he seemed to be.  One day in 1979 I was at Disneyland, waiting in line for "Pirates" wearing a t-shirt that said "Jesus Lives", when I saw Larry walking by.  I yelled, "Hey Larry", at him.  He turned looked at me, saw my shirt and suddenly his face burst open with the most beautiful smile as he waived back at me.  It was a moment I'll never forget as Larry was a brother I will never forget.  Thanks Larry.  I'll see you again soon.

Thanks to Larry for such an amazing impact in my life. Back in the early 80's I learned that loving Jesus wasn't just something my parents did - but that it was actually a "cool" thing to do. I have to admit I had a huge crush on Larry for many years - but that aside, his music kept me grounded through my crazy teenagehood and well into my adulthood. It saw me through a very messy divorce, and gave me the courage to work in the prison system. Thank you Larry for ripples in the water that you didn't even realize you had created. Enjoy jamming with the Heavenly bands now!

Dear Norman Family,

I am still dealing with my emotions over this news. I find this difficult.
There are few people who changed my life to the degree that Larry Norman did.
I feel a great debt to this man.

However, there was much said by Larry about going home and it is my deepest hope for myself.
I look forward to joining the holy band some day.

May you all be blessed with God's grace in the days ahead.

As I read about larry's death this morning I was overcome with memories of my time in England while in the USAF.  My friends and I were avid listeners to Larry's music.  We had a prayer group and youth ministry and we used Larry's music frequently in our ministry.  Thank you Larry for your faith, and your contribution to music.

I'm 24 and grew up listening to Larry's music because of the impact he had on my Dad.  Even though I never met Larry I feel like a friend has died.  I'm looking forward to be able to spend some of eternity playing guitar and singing with him.  May God be with you and give you comfort in this difficult time.
