When I was a teenager a Christian asked me to a Larry Norman concert. I expected something boring but was amazed how good this bloke was. I then attended a second concert (I live in Australia) where his brother Charlie played with the dreadlocks.

Within a few years I became a Christian finding that these people were relevant. Larry's music and life were a part of me coming to Jesus. I found that people did stand up for God and not sit in pews.

Thanks Larry I feel like a part of me has just died but gone to be in a place where joy will abound forever. Miss ya mate but your memories will live here forever.

I heard today, Friday the 7th. I sent a tribute to my friends online. Thank you, my friends, for opening your hearts to us all at this special time.

This is what I said:

Larry Norman is one of the two or three most important musical influences in my life, and among the most important influence to me from all thought and culture.
I'm deeply saddened by his passing away, and believe that he went to be with the Lord at his passing.

I've almost always been uncomfortable with the way Larry was provocative, often seeming to be so for no good reason. Listening to criticisms of him, sometimes from me, the criticisms kept returning his Larry's personal brokenness, the way he seemed to judge, that he neglected love of his neighbor. No doubt these are true in part. We only see in part now, but will soon see in whole. Larry's willingness to offend resonated with me as imitating Jesus in Jesus' willingness to offend. And no doubt, Larry fell short in many ways.
But his willingness to violate the norms of propriety always struck me as a model of expressing his special gifts. I continually call to mind the words of his song with the refrain, without love, you are nothing.

Now, I trust, he sees clearly where we only see in part. I will miss him.

Rest in peace, brother Larry.

An obituary and a tribute.

TO all of Larrys Family and friends, my heart really goes out to you at this moment as I just found out that Larry went to be in the arms of his Savior.
I have been a fan of his music for many years and I have had the privilage of being being a roadie for two of his concerts here in Australia and I played his music when I was on radio in the 80's and 90's. His music inspired me and when I was feeling down it made me happy. His music was pure worship and he sung every song from his heart! He has left a big impression on the world and It was one that his family can be proud of. He not only touched people with his music but also with his life. We will all miss him and I can not wait for that reunion concert when we all get to heaven.

God be with you.
with love,

Thanks, Charles for allowing us to post to this site, although I feel that anything I write will be inadequate. I was introduced to Larry's music some 30 years ago. I fell in love with Larry presence, his power, his music, and his message.  I only ever did hear his Bootleg album and separately the song Moses. Under Larry's spell, I learned to play UFO & Moses, and the first song I ever finger-picked and sang (in Church), was UFO. You never forget those moments, and to whom you owe them. Well, I've continued to play the guitar and sing ever since, and I owe a lot of it to Larry.

A few months ago my wife and I watched several of Larry's videos on YouTube. It was great to see him perform, and I decided I'd get round to recording 'Moses' and posting on to YouTube. That gave my wife an idea . . . and she bought me Larry's Bootleg Album for Christmas 2007. The best Christmas surprise ever! It's been magical listening to those songs again, and to Larry's voice, his sincerity, his inimitable style. We read in the CD cover that Larry wasn't too well.  That was sad, and worrying to learn. I posted my own version of Larry's 'Moses' last night on YouTube. This evening I've learned the sad news of Larry's death.

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said, I'm sure.  But, to Larry's family and friends, our hearts are with you all. We will never forget Larry. This wonderful man, and his wonderful work, will live on.

God Bless.

I graduated Azusa Pacific in 1981, and during those years of my early Christian faith was given Larry's record, Only Visting this Planet.  Larry's ministry was and still is one of the rock solid truths that are a part of my core faith.  ...Just know while scanning some short-wave radio stuff heard a christian broadcast (which I normally skip right over) and heard about Larry's death. ...  Just hearing of his passing reminds me of my core faith that has long been put in a closet. ...  His death reminds me I still do believe in the core of the faith, even if the instution of the church often falls so very short.  "The Word" is everlasting, and the faith in the truth, is what makes us strong.  Even when man has screwed up the translation in the instutions we have created.  My thoughts and prayers are with Larry's family.  I don't know if it helps, but hearing of his death, reminds me of my life.

I met Larry was he was in Winkler doing a concert.  I'll never forget that day that my dad brought me to meet him and get his autograph on my t-shirt.

His music was honest and true.  Truly was a great guy and I send my sympathies to his family.

Hope to meet you again sometime Larry.

How strange we must all feel. One part of us is sad to see Larry passing, but another part is happy to know he is with God now. No more pain, suffering, tears.
He was one of the first Christian artists I heard. I couldn't believe what I was hearing out of my speakers. Rock music with a message. I had to hear more, I had to see a concert. Well, I did hear more and I saw plenty of concerts.

One of my favorite memories of Larry was after a concert at Great America near Chicago. I had a chance to meet and speak with him for quite a while. He then informed a group of us that he was going out into the park to witness to people there. I was with a group of friends that had to get home, so I missed out on a chance to hear Larry preach.

We will miss him dearly.

Thank you for sharing him with us for all these years.

God bless the Norman family.

I appreciate that Larry was a pioneer for Christian rock/contemporary music. I am sure he took a lot of guff, and I believe he'll be rewarded for it. Many people who might not even know his name are indebted to him and a few others like him. Blessings to you his family as you grieve his loss.

Yup, Larry Norman died Sunday, Feb. 24. I know it sounds strange, but he sort of helped mentor me in my faith through his music when I was in high school / college. His songs still are stuck in my soul to this day.

Here's a slideshow I made to one of his songs called "The Tune". Larry wrote the song live on stage one evening when he made a mistake between two songs on the piano and chuckled... "Once, there was a Tune!". He immediately went with the metaphor... "And everyone knew how it went..." and, well, you'll see the rest if you care to watch the video.

Some of you are familiar with Calvin Miller's Singer Trilogy. This is much in the same vein. Of course Miller's trilogy hit the bookstores about two decades after Larry wrote and recorded this.

God bless you and Larry's family and all who were touched by the life and art of this passionate, amazing and enigmatic brother. Love and peace.

Thank you for providing an opportunity to share our condolences.

Larry was inspirational and provocative person, whom I will always thank God for. He, through his music, brought me closer to Jesus and I will never forget his personality or his songs.

When I wanted to share my faith with my family, his music was a fantastic blessing. My teenaged daughters are now fully fledged Jesus rockers thanks to Larry smile.gif Even my wife (who claims not to like rock music) can't help tapping her feet or joining in with some of the Lyrics.

Heaven's gain is our momentary loss. I pray that you will all be strengthened in this time that we are without Larry. I will miss him, just the thought that he won't make any more songs is so sad to me. He really has been (and will continue to be) a hero for so many Christians all around the world.

God bless you all. Love Peter.

It was 1973 when i was first introduced to Larrys music. To say i was blown away by his lyrics would be an understatement to say the least. Not coming from a church going family this was literally the first christian experience i ever had. But soon life and my rebel ways took me in another direction.

Four years ago i went through such a painful experience losing my wife, business, children and all hope. I became this angry person i had never known. I lived in the darkness...for the darkness. Drugs were my comfort.

In November of 07 i stumbled upon Larry again in some old videos on youtube i think it was. I listened to his songs over and over. That night i fell on my knees for the first time. Just me and God alone in my bedroom and for the first time in such a long time i had a strange kind of peace come over me. No longer did all the hurt and the pain seem so important.

Today i am a baby in Christ...4 mos old to be exact. I am learning and growing everyday. And everyday i listen to Larry.

To Larrys family and friends i would like to say how sorry i am for your loss. I am sure he was a one of a kind human being.

And if i could talk to Larry myself i would thank him so much for were it not for him and his music...i might still be living in the dark.

And Larry, one day brother when we meet in heaven....well...youve got a big bear hug coming.

God Bless You

My sister called tonight to tell me that Larry had died.  My heart was both sad and jubilant.  He touched my life deeply.  When I was at Campbellsville College in Kentucky in 72, 6 students heard he was performing across the state.  We cut class and drove several hours to be at that concert that was so real and full of God's love.  We stayed after and talked with Larry and felt as if we there was hope for the church that had slipped into a stone congregation.
Years later as a chaplain at the Federal prison I contacted Larry about a concert for the men I worked with because I knew that they woule resonate with his message.  I had received word that he would be willing to come, but I left the system before we were able to arrange it.
His music is still critical to my life.  I know that he has stepped beyond this world and is seeing the face of God.
May you find comfort in the unknown millions of lives he touched.  He fought the good fight and has reached the shore.
My prayers remain with your family.

Like many young Christians in the 70s, I loved rock music and Jesus.
Church didn't understand.
Larry helped me to realise that both were okay.

I've listened to his albums so often that I (and my kids) kno wthem by heart.
My grandson Theo has already been introduced to Larry's music.

So many of his songs were about heaven it should seem right that he's gone there.

I've got mixed emotions hearing of his death - profound gladness for his  ministry and being able to share in it as a fan and a fellow worshipper, sadness that his earthly ministry has ended and delight that he's with Jesus in a way we can only imagine in our earthly life.

My prayers are with Larry's family and all those who mourn his passing.

I was saddened laast night when I heard of Larry's passing.  My prayers are with the family that God would comfort them and hold them lose.

Not to sound like a broken record, remember records?, Larry's music encouraged me and made me want to play it. So I started playing bass in a little band in the late 70's with a couple friends from church. One of our most "requested" songs was "I Love You". We wre so coolsmile.gif I remember playing "Why don't you look into Jesus" and my Dad saying what powerful lyrics those were. He said they would sound better backed by a more country style music!

Not only was his music great, his lyrics spoke volumnes to me.  They made me more socially aware of the times. From racism to social injustice to hypocricy in the church. He had the Holy Spirit led courage to write about things that were taboo in church circles. He helped open my eyes to the fact we all need Jesus and not the palstic Jesus that so many "religious" leaders were cramming down our throats. But the real Jesus.

Anyway, we've lost a amazing voice that was to Christian music what Elvis was to rock n roll. He will be missed.

Peace.   Rick

Happy Birthday Larry, into the real deal. Not this warm up, but your eternal life in the glorious presence of God. You finally get to play for a crowd, and talk about your back-up singers.

I met you in church in Los Gatos, CA in the late 70s. You were friendly and gracious to a couple of geeky high school kids who happened to recognize you.

One thing can be said for certain. You made sure the devil didnt have all the good music!

May God fill your family with the certainty that it isnt goodbye; its just see ya later.

Thank you, and Thank God for you.

Larry communicated to his audience a message of love, peace and justice. He was a thinker, a complicated artist but a man who loved life. The impact Larry had on my life and my music is profound. I will always love this man and his music. Larry will live on in our hearts and his music will always be with us.

It's strange... I hadn't listened to any of Larry's CDs for awhile, when just a couple weeks ago I started listening to "stop this flight" and others. Out of nowhere today I thought about Larry... For some reason I searched youtube for "Larry Norman" and soon learned of the sad news.

There's just something really special about this man.

I will never forget get seeing him in play back in the mid 90s. Larry was warm and gracious as he signed an old beat up "Bootleg" LP I had brought. I still have that LP and the signature.

Even though I am no longer a Christian, the lessons that I learned from Larry's music and life story have taken me far and have helped me through a lot of troubled times. For me, Larry's poetry and his unwaivering message of love and tolerance transcends any dogma or belief system.

"As though youth were my invention...
As though love lay undefined,
To stay free was my intention.
To stay young and unconfined."

Larry -  We love you and we'll see you soon.

Your friend,
Jason

As a child I was a huge fan of Larry. I remember he was in Holland for a concert in Gouda. I was about 7 years old and I went to the concert with my mum. I made a drawing for him and I wanted to meet him so I put together my nerves and asked if I could meet him and I was allowed to go into his dresingroom and talk to him! I remember I was very shy and didn't know what to say but it was a reallyreally great experience then meeting my 'idol' at such a young age! The concert was really great and as a kid I was impressed by the crowd and people dancing and so on.... 'Why should the devil have all the good music' was my favourite song I could play it all day. I could sing through the whole song while I didn't know english at the time ... It drived my parents grazy because they heard the song day after day after day after day....  I even think it was because of Larry's rock music I was inspired to start drumming!

Dear Family may Jesus be with you as you miss Larry terribly

Lots of love from Danitsja

Larry's music had an awesome impact on my young Christian life. Back then, I believed in playing it loud so that it "soaked in". It must have worked because at 46, I can still recall the lyrics of many of my favorite songs. More importantly, Larry was a pioneer in the field of Christian rock, and influenced more people than we will ever know (at least on this side of heaven). Thank you Larry for being obedience to God's calling by writing & performing your convicting songs!

I was so moved to hear of Larry's "going home" - over here in the UK his music had a tremendous impact on a my generation of musicians in a very traditional culture - he showed us it was OK to love God through our style of music and to worship in it.

Perhaps his greatest impact on me was the de-hyping of many taboos - lyrics like "Why don't you look into Jesus" and of course "I wish we'd all been ready" are a timeless tribute to one of God's very precious servants.

You are all in my prayers, I just Praise God that Larry is whole once again!

Many Blessings in Jesus

I had the chance to see Larry perform in the early 80's after recently having rededicated my life back to Christ. He motivated me and gave me encouragement to walk out my faith and follow what God had put in my heart. So many Christians who wanted to live for Christ in an uncompromising way identified with Larry and wanted to stand strong for what they believed in, just like he did. He strengthened my decision to follow God and pursue my desire to minister to those people that many in society wanted to ignore. Whether or not something was socially acceptable shouldn't affect our ministries, and Larry was a pioneer in that regard. He was a true Christian in every sense of the word. He is now free, and we rejoice that he is finally home having received his reward in heaven for his service here on Earth. We will surely miss him but will never forget him or the lessons he left behind for us that remain.

Just heard this weekend about Larry's passing.  First saw him at the Christian march down Hollywood Blvd. in '68 or '69 (I was in high school).  Loved Christian Rock music ever since. Saw him several times after that.  He was a pioneer and pioneers aren't always appreciated (or even liked or treated well).  He took a lot of crap from the Christian "establishment" that he absolutely did not deserve.  He's at peace with his Savior.  Praise God.

Only one month before Larry went to Heaven, my brother in law Michael Lee was getting ready to go too.  One of the last things he wanted was a cd from Larry Norman.  My daughter ordered one for him and you sent it right out, but the case arrived empty, Mike said well, hurry and order another one and we'll listen to it then.  You sent not only one but several (3 or 4) cd's out to him, but he had already gone home.  So I guess Mike will get to hear Larry in person now, while He's singing to our Lord in Heaven.   Larry meant so much to my husband and his brothers Mike and Charles.  They were street kids in New Mexico, in the 70's and very alone.  I often thought without Larry's music and influance, they (especially Blane) would be very different people and may not have even been able to make it thru the hardships, or evenhad tried to live.  Thank you for trying about the cd's and May the Lord bless you. We just found out tonight.

I had not heard about Larry's death when I was recovering in bed at home after surgery just 4 days after his death.  My wife had set up a tape machine for me to listen to music to help me pass the time.  I had it in my mind that I would listen to all my old cassette tapes.  Life has been a struggle.  A long time believer, still struggling with the remnants of addiction - but by God's grace, healing was taking place.   One of the tapes I put in the machine was "In Another Land."  I brought me back to childhood.  Back to when my "first love" for Christ was so alive.  Even 32 years after Larry recorded it, his music was speaking to my heart.  I had heard about his heart troubles, yet he was still pressing onward with the Lord.  Little did I know when I was listening to the tape that he had already gone to be with Him.  Later that weekend I heard he had passed away.  I just wanted you to know God has used Larry to speak to me in a profound way.  He was a "Real" man... with all the flaws and troubles and difficult times we all face - but glory to God that Jesus will carry his children through.  Larry was a testament to that. Thanks Larry.  Your music will live on to proclaim that God loves us for who we are through Christ.

Im sure you have read many messages like mine but I want to say it.  You have no idea what an influence Larry Norman was on my life.  I was introduced to his music at the age of 11 and he remained the most important figure to Christian music.  Even thought the world might not fully know his influence every Christian artist out there and anyone who enjoys "Contemporary Christian" music needs to know of this remarkable man.  Throughout my adolescent years I was able to hang onto the gospel of Larry.  His music focused my attention toward the Bible and my relationship with Christ.  Words fail to explain my emotions.  I am glad to know that Larry's goal of going home has been realized but sad that this world is now without his light.

God Bless you all.

I was just bumped the article. I am still stunned. Larry's music touched a chord with me the first time I heard it, now over 16 years ago. Since then I managed to find a lot of his materials even an LP of his. He was an amazing artist that refused to conform, but still ministered to a great number of people. I am deeply saddened by his loss, but thankful he is no longer suffering. I guess his first Warner album has come to fruition, he was only visiting this planet.

Peace be with all of you in your recovery all family and fans...

I saw larry several time in the early to mid 80's.  The best concert memory I have is of a concert he played in a school located in Ipswich.  It was about 1983 or 1984.  Ipswich is a town located just outside of Brisbane in Australia.  Larry arrived and he had laryngitis and could not sing.  He said to the crowd " I can't really sing so I thought I'd just come and visit with you for a while.".  That's just what he did for the next couple of hours, he talked to us about what having a relationship with Jesus meant for him.  Most concerts you get to hear the music you already have, performed live.  At this concert I felt like I got to know the man a little.  No person is perfect and I'm sure that Larry had his fault but I also know that with his life Larry made a difference in this world.  After 25 years his music and lyrics still touch my heart and talk to me about what is important in this life.

I first heard of Larry in 1998.  I had always mocked Christian music and saw it as a bad imitation of what the world was doing.  When I first heard Larry's music it was like for the first time I was hearing truth in music.  I had grown up going to a very old fashioned church where "Christian rock" was considered more evil than any type of secular music or at least as bad, though it seemed acceptable to listen to "hurtin' songs" by certain country artists!  What a laugh.  Anyway, I grabbed what I could of Larry's music and have been a fan every since.  I had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert in the spring of 2000 and adored him all the more.  That is where I discovered "The Tune" and am so glad Larry knew it and is singing it still.  See you on the other side dear brother!

Thank you Larry,
for great music,
boundary breaking ideas,
laughter,
confidence in God,
and the realization the Christianity is wildly exciting.

We have passed our delight in your music on to our sons and I am sure they will pass it on to theirs as well. I am thankful for you insight and challenge to be true and wonderously in love with God, and with people because of Him.

Please accept my heartfelt condolence in the lost of Larry. It nearly feels to me that I have lost a family member. Larry meant so much to me. His music truly touched me. I bought Upon This Rock around 30 years ago. I immediately became a fan. Larry's music assured me that it was OK to be intelligent, a Christian and a rocker! Through the years Larry's music touched me in a number of ways. The triology spoke volumes of life here on earth, temptation and how glorious life to come will be. Songs such as "Sitting In My Kitchen", "Let The Rain Fall Down" and "Goodbye, Farewell" spoke to the everyday difficulties we all face throughout our lives:  loss, sorrow and the march of time. There was a difficult time in my life in which I strayed and led a carnal lifestyle. When the Lord welcomed me back home, I found comfort and strength in the song, "I Am A Servant." Records were vinyl then and I nearly wore a grove in the record playing that song over and over. I had the privilege of seeing Larry perform twice, once in Kansas City and the second time in Springfield, Missouri. In the second performance, he ended the concert with "I Am A Servant". It moved me then. It moves me now. God bless you and may the Comforter hold you in His embrace just as Jesus now welcomes his good and faithful servant to a life without pain and sorrow in the very real presence of Christ.

I was saddened to learn bout Larrys Home going. His album In Another Land was the first Contemporary Christian Music album I bout after I accepted Jesus as my Savior. Back then the Church frowned on Larrys music and Christian Rock in general. Im 50 now and Larrys music still has an impact on my life. Im not much for words but as Larry would say "Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music?" My heart and prayers go out to his family. On a closing note Im saddened that us who know Contemporary Christian Music as it is today am sad that we have forgotten our past. Larry and groups like 2nd Chapter of Acts,Love Song,Keith Green, paved the way. Its time we as Christians learn more about our past. Larry? You are truly "IN Another Land" Cannt wait to meet you Brother. In Christian Love,Tony Dezenzio
