I have always considered Larry Norman among three men who inspired me to step outside the box in my formative years, the other two being the late Francis Schaeffer and my late father, Pastor Culver E. Stone. Some might find it odd given my current ideologies and projects, still, the music, lyrics, writings, and sermons of these men played a positive role in my development. A significant shift in my youthful paradigm was directly due to listening to the album Only Visiting This Planet, and latter the benefit album for the mission in Calcutta. Larry Normans passing sadly completes a personal trilogy. He will be missed.

Quillen, my friend. . .

What can be said to you that has not been already said by Larry's music, Francis Schaeffer, and your father, that you help you to see that even as a pastor's son, you have a "God shaped void" within your heart that nothing can fill except Jesus.  I am a missionary's kid (MK).  I went through what a lot of PKs did, feeling that I was cocooned in a world that was isolated from my buddies at school, actually, I was embarrassed by my parents work, so I went out of my way to make sure that they heard me swear on the basketball court and that they saw my Playboy centerfold's hanging in my locker, until one ratted me out to the principal and I was busted.  I was shamed my parents and their strict church members.  That turned me all the more bitter against living for Christ.  I went off the deep end and got into more worldly ways than I want to tell a stranger, even though I count you as a friend, because I see a reflection of you in me, being raised in ministry.

The hypocrites of the church bothered me too.  But then, as I was sitting in a bar, I saw married men hitting on women and married women hitting on men, and it occurred to me that hypocrites in bar did not keep us "non-hypocrites" out, so why did I think that I should break it off with the church because I found a few hypocrites there?

Larry Norman did not die for your sins, but he died believing in the one who died for your sins--Jesus.  You seem to know that the way to life is through Jesus, but for some reason, you are holding back on giving yourself wholly to Him.  I don't need to know your reasons . . .  God knows them much better than either of us, but I plead with you as a fellow preacher's kid, turn to Jesus and give Him your whole heart.  Let me take a stab at something.  Let's say you are 28 years old and that you left your Christian parent's home at 18 (you can fill in the numbers with reality).  In this case you would have given yourself 10 years knowing "I am not a Christian."  Why not give God equal time and see what He can do in your life?  Yield your life to him, as I finally did, and let him prove Himself to you--that He truly loves you and wants your fellowship.  Give him the next ten years of your life in a loving and sincerely commitment--often called repentance--turning away from yourself, your lifestyle, your past, and turning your life over to Him--replacing the world with Christian fellowship, Bible study, and loving God with all of your heart, soul, strength and mind and loving your neighbor as yourself.  If you give God the opportunity and give him as many years as what you have given to running from Him, then if it does not work, go ahead an post a message in ten years (or what ever your equal time is) and let us know that God was not faithful to his promises.  I think that you, like me, will find that He is.  I hope to see you post again some day and say, "Hi, I'm Quillen, and I am a Christian."

Respectfully, your loving brother in the fellowship of Christ,

Missionary Kid

I'm glad to hear that Larry's music has affected you so much.  I'm sure Larry Norman (who I got to meet breifly about 11 years ago) would be thrilled that you listened to his music.  If Larry would have had the chance to talk w/ you before he died I'm sure he would encourage you to follow thru w/ what his music was saying all along.  "One Way".  Jesus said in John 14:6 "I am The Way, The Truth, The Life.  No man comes to the Father except through Me."

Will you take the next step and run to Jesus for rescue?  If you die apart from Jesus you will die in your sins.  I type this with love but God created a place where He did not exist, filled it w/ fire for the devil, not for you.  But if any of us reject His free offer of salvation we will go there.

You said your dad was a Pastor.  I don't know what your upbringing was like but I can only assume you know the Gospel story very well.  Try this, don't be used to Jesus, be amazed by Him.  Don't let words like Jesus loves you, or repent and be saved make your eyes roll.  Let them seep in.  His cross is the only way.  Turn from your sins and run to Jesus Christ for rescue.  I'll run, I hope you get a chance to read this.  I can only pray the Holy Spirit does His work.  MSG boards are a crummy way to reach out in love.  If only I had Larry's way of communicating................

Hi Quillian,

Your story interested me because I come from a very similar place.  I am a Christian, although, I'm not really Evangelical.  I'm more of a mystic influenced by the desert fathers. Maybe, I'd call myself a contemplative, if I have to give it a label.  That doesn't negate from my personal relationship with Christ, in fact, this path has helped me to keep it vital.

I was also influenced by Larry and Schaeffer, who opened all kinds of doors of insight for me.

I bought your book.  The first one.  I'd like to write you off line to talk more about all of this.

under His mercy,

Terry

Hey Quillan:

I read your quote, "poetry is passion, poetry is power," and it reminded me of Charles Williams, who felt the same way. I have just been reading Glen Cavaliero's book, Charles Williams, Poet of Theology, which goes in depth into Charles (Walter Stansby) William's poetry. I am mostly familiar with his novels, of which there are seven, but they are also about the power of poetry, although they are prose. Since Charles Williams is such a common name for authors, it's difficult to find his novels by searching. I have a list of them on Amazon and also under books on my site, alivingdog.com. The best of his poetry is probably his Arthurian cycles, Taliessin Through Logres and The Region of the Summer Stars. May not be your cup of tea, of course, but there it is.

Our other common interest is, of course Larry's music. There's also an interview with Larry on the dog, which is reprinted from Gilbert, the magazine of the American Chesterton Society, and used by permission. There's also an article on Larry I did for HM, and a bit called A Beginner's Guide to Larry Norman, originally written for an online magazine, which briefly considers the Trilogy and a few other seminal albums, notably the overlooked rocker, Something New Under the Son. I close with an epithet from a Charles Williams novel, "believe and doubt well". The question, of course, for all of us, is what to believe and what to doubt. The best of luck on your journey as you, and all of us, wrestle with that question. -Gord Wilson, gordrw@yahoo.com, alivingdog.com.

Dear Quill,

As nice as it is that you respect Larry, I don't think He'd care about that. What he would care about is your relationship with Jesus.  To quote Larry "If you're not a Christian, you really should become one."  So maybe if you really respect Larry you should get to know the driving force behind all that he did-Jesus.

P.s. This letter is not meant to sound harsh or condemning, and if it came across that way I'm truly sorry.

Anna
