Last week I discovered that one of my personal heroes had died just a few weeks ago. Larry Norman was a Christian singer/song writer who has been called by many the father of contemporary Christian music.  As a teenager living within the religious confines of Northern Irish family life, I remember going to Belfast to watch this long blonde haired hippy perform. I was transported out of my bubble as this guy, so unconventional in appearance, using words I didnt think Christians were allowed to use, poured the love and passion of Jesus over his audience with music, wit, and wisdom (and not a little sarcasm too). Perhaps he is most famous for songs that Cliff Richard recorded (but never did justice to), like Hes the Rock that Doesnt Roll, I wish wed all been ready, and the classic Why should the devil have all the good music?! where he sang they tell me cut my hair, theyre drivin me insane, I grew it out long to make room for my brain, Sometimes people dont understand, whats a good boy doin in a Rock and Roll band! He really upset the US Christian establishment when he sang I dont mind none of your hymns, just give me a song that has a beat, I dont mind none of your hymns, just give me a song that moves my feet, I dont like any of your funeral marches I aint dead yet!

I went on the web and read obituaries, tributes and reminiscences about Larry. I never knew him, but heard him in concert many times. I have to admit to shedding a few tears! He inspired me to learn guitar, to be bold in talking about Jesus, and not to pay too much attention to convention when it gets in the way of Jesus.

In his own words Goodbye, Farewell, well meet again, somewhere beyond the sky, I pray that you will stay with God, goodbye my friends, goodbye! Ill miss you, thanks for the inspiration, see you again soon somewhere beyond the sky.

It's amazing how nearly a month after Larry's death people are still just hearing about it for the first time. If we think that this message board has a lot of people on it now, how many more will be here a year from now?! There are still so many fans of Larry's who have yet to learn that he passed away.

Apparently there was an obituary in a national newspaper here in the UK, but I missed seeing it. It was only last weekend that the latest edition of Christianity magazine hit the shelves that I noticed a small segment that mentioned it in their news section. I hope that they will do a bigger piece in the coming issues in line with Larry's influence, and the respect he deserves. I have been amazed (though I not surprised) to read here, and on youtube how many people came to trust Christ because of LN!

The newpaper which you refer is most likely The Guardian. I have a paper copy of the obit here, but here is a link to the online article. Quite a large piece in the newspaper, and just about the only one to have printed an item so soon after Larry's passing. Here's the link - http://music.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,,2260140,00.html

And I see also that The Times had one, but quite a few days later - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article3506298.ece

Hope these help. There was also a "Larry Norman Remembered" article in the Church of England Newspaper on March 7th, which I was sent a copy of today (20 March).

My pleasure, MartyBoy, if you wanted a scan of the actual UK obit from The Guardian, reply with your email contact details and I'll send it on this weekend for you. Same applies to anyone else who wants it too, of course!
Only too pleased to help where and when I can.
