Born Again - Larry Norman - n The Jesus Movement

I remember back when,

It was on a Friday night back in the middle 70s that I was out looking to party and get high when I was suddenly approached by a group of Jesus People armed with Bibles.

One of the Jesus People pulled me into his car and plugged in a cassette tape of Larry Norman singing Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music, and The Rock That Doesnt Roll.

I was amazed by his music, and how he was rockin and kickin out the jams but he was singing about Jesus. I had never heard anything like that before.

My life changed that day.

I prayed and
was Born Again in Christ as they all prayed with me while Larry Norman's music was playing in the back round from the car stereo.

And now Larrys playin in The Heavenly Band.

God bless Larry Norman. I have been numb since I heard the news on a discussion forum a few days ago. I realize he is with Christ now, but Im still in shock.

You know, we watch the days come, and we watch the days go, and the sun always seems to come up again for a new day.

And yet someday, at some point, there will be a day that will be our last day here. There will come a time when we will see our last sunrise, and our last sunset.

The thought was a sobering one for me since this has happened.

I read online, that Larry was surrounded by his family and friends when he left, and that he died in the arms of his brother and sister in law at his home in bed.

It is a difficult feeling to describe when someone dies in your arms.

Several years ago I had been at the hospital with my cousin who had been very sick. We were up watching him all night until morning came. He then asked to sit up on the side of his hospital bed, and so being the medically trained family member at the time I helped him to sit up on the side of his bed. As I held him steady, he released his last breath and died as I held him. Ill never forget that last breath he let out before leaving. Some things we just dont forget. Larry Norman was a major influence in The Jesus Movement that broke away from the hippie movement in the 60s and 70s in California.

Larry first started a secular band called People and they had a hit record on the charts called I Love You and the day the album was released Larry left the band to follow Jesus Christ.

He was the first to perform and record Jesus Rock n Roll music.

Later on, the style of music he pioneered would eventually come to be called Contemporary Christian Music.

He has often been called The Father of Jesus Rock Music, or Contemporary Christian Music as it is called now.

Larry Norman is a historic figure in American Christian history.

He began taking the Gospel message of Jesus Christ to the streets with his guitar years ago, instead of staying inside a building preaching to the choir.

And when he started recording for Capital Records, the Christians didnt like the rock music he played, but they approved of the message, and the people on the streets liked the music he played, but not the preaching, so he was being hit with rocks from both sides of the camp.

But he stayed the course.

He fought the good fight, and he kept the faith.

Since the release of the First Love DVD set about The Jesus Movement, I have long hoped that Larry Norman would have put together a book and a DVD about him and the Jesus Movement that took place back then in California during the early days.

I was able to see Larry in concert several times.
Probably my favorite time seeing Larry was at an all day concert called A Day In The Sun in 1977 in northern California. If I remember after Larry put down his classical guitar and picked up his sunburst Les Paul, he actually did the Chuck Berry duck walk during one of his songs with the band. It was a day Ill always remember.  Larry was awesome, Randy was funny, and John Fisher asked Pam Mark Hall to marry him that day while at the microphone on stage. Yes John, many of us guys fell for Pam that day J God bless you in Christ,
