I heard the news of Larry's graduation to glory on 1 March, 2008, while driving home from a retreat where I had done a workshop on "Your Calling & Giftings: Where Do We Start?". During that week I had sensed the Lord directing me to start with the lyrics of Larry's son, "I am A Servant" (I played it on the CD player, while we all listened attentively). That song embodied Larry's life and calling, and impacted me in my mid teens, when In Another Land was released when I was still in high school. I had discovered Larry in 1969 with Upon This Rock was bought for me by mother when I was 11 years old. I was never the same.

I was a missionary pastor's son, and loathed my parent's music. Larry touched me to my core with music style and lyrics that made sense to me, and ignited my imagination and passion for Jesus. In my late teens, I went into the army and five years of rebellion (a result of painful rejection within the church and issues of my own heart). When I came back to Jesus, Larry's influence continued in my life, and it became a catalyst of grace and love and truth and life, where Jesus impacted me more and more through this man's music and passion.

I met Larry a few times over the years, at some concerts and festivals, and even the occassional workshop he did, and the last face to face I had with him was when he came to Toronto Airport in the 1990's and was involved with the Audience of One conference. I kept in touch with him when his health deteriated. He was always faithful to write back and I love him for that. I told him that I thanked him for modelling Jesus in a human skin for me. He kept pointing me back to Jesus and wanted none of that attention. But he was gracious and understood that I just wanted to say thank you to him, even though he never was wanting that attention. Larry's love and humility continues to impact me.

I turned 50 just three days before Larry died. I feel like I am still 17. I love Jesus more than I have ever have in the past. Part of the zeal and passion is the result of Larry and his own obsession with Jesus.

Thank you Larry, for modelling Jesus, and for being my friend. I carry you on my iPod, and I keep on singing all those wonderful songs!

Jesus is still the Rock that doesn't roll!
