One of the last interviews Larry ever did is posted at alivingdog.com. It's reprinted there by permission of the American Chesterton Society. It's unique because the president, Dale Ahlquist, is the brother of Larry's former wife, Pam who was, among other things, the stewardess on "Six O CLock News" on Only Visiting This Planet. It was Larry who first suggested Dale read Chesterton, whom he was so struck by that he became head of a Chesterton Society. This interview first appeared in the Society's magazine, Gilbert (which is what the G in G.K. Chesterton stands for). There's also a link to the article I did in HM based on interviewing Larry. -Gord Wilson, gordrw@yahoo.com, alivingdog.com

Gord, thank you for posting the link. After reading it, as with most articles containing thoughts/observations by Larry, it encourages me to go a little further in considering what being a follower of Jesus 'really' is.

I have attended protestant churches all my life, have been been involved in music and even a musical worship leader for 20 years. Darned, if God doesn't appear to be throwing something 'new' into my heart. I don't know what my next move will be, but will lay it before the Lord on this one....

Larry was nothing if not provocative. I don't agree with everything he said, and I don't think anyone else would, but it still jump starts your brain. In the interview, even Larry is surprised when Dale quotes back that Larry said everything in C.S. Lewis is in Chesterton. Even were that the case (I haven't read everything by both of those prolific authors), Lewis had a way of wording things that makes him a joy to read. Chesterton is great to read also, but maybe because he wrote about a hundred years ago, takes a bit more getting used to. I think his best non-fiction work is Orthodoxy, but many people find it unreadable. However, open it randomly and read a sentence and you may be hooked. Some great novels by Chesterton are Manalive, The Man Who Was Thursday, The Ball and the Cross, Four Faultless Felons, The Club of Queer Trades, and The Flying Inn. He also wrote the Father Brown mystery stories.

Larry also mentions Malcolm Muggeridge. His autobiography, Chronicles of Wasted Time, is a joy to read (and was originally published in two volumes, The Green Stick and The Infernal Grove). He wrote the first book on Mother Teresa, Something Beautiful for God, and a book to accompany a BBC series he did called A Third Testament. Jesus Rediscovered was a bestseller in UK, but it's a collection of essays that runs backwards as it were. Like all of us, Malcolm grew in his faith. In some of the last essays in the book he didn't at that time believe in the resurrection. His last book, Conversion: A Spiritual Journey, was written after he became Catholic, which Larry refers to in the interview. This book was published under about three different names in various editions.

Anyone looking for something to read may like to dip into these authors (or maybe not, they may not be everyone's cup of tea). It's more surprising that Larry mentioned Hilaire Belloc, who was a friend of Chesterton's and apparently took himself lightly, as did G.K., but who even fewer have read. -The Best, Gord Wilson, gordrw@yahoo.com, alivingdog.com.

I'd just like to share a fun memory...I had Only Visiting This Planet memorized from childhood, including the stewardess speech.  I had fun with it in my 20's when people were asked at a party to come up to the mike and tell a joke or do an impression.  I quoted the stewardess speech verbatim, and I won a coupon for a free bloomin onion at Outback Steakhouse! smile.gif
